Levi Colwill proves again that he is Chelsea’s best leader

I speak about leadership and true captains a lot, and it’s something that I feel we truly lack in this squad.

Yes, when things are going well, they’re all out there shouting, talking, leading, and showing passion and desire. But it’s when the chips are down, that is when they all disappear. True leaders lead in good and bad times – we lack them.

Levi Colwill for me is the best all round leaders we have in this group, and we saw that shine through against Liverpool at the weekend. The chips WERE down as we went 1-0 down inside 5 minutes, and we didn’t win the game. But Colwill was there organising, leading, talking, dominating, motivating, showing desire, and showing that he cares. That is all perfect leadership and captain qualities.

Reece James is one of the best players to ever come out of our academy and on his day, the most important player we have. He’s crucial to this Chelsea side. I see him as a reasonable captain, but I don’t see him as the very best captain we could have. I still see him as just too shy and timid, even though he’s ‘propa Chels’. Vice captain, sure. But main club captain right now at least, I still don’t think he’s there. Colwill though, he’s there, he could do the job to a top standard. I don’t agree with this ‘leading by example’ nonsense. Of course, it’s good to lead by example, but we need much more from our captain than just doing that.

Colwill is 23-years-old now and has built up 136 senior appearances to his name. So in terms of experience, he’s growing, he’s getting there.

We need more Colwill’s.
