Liverpool lead race to sign Marc Guehi

Liverpool are reportedly in pole position to sign Crystal Palace defender Marc Guehi, with Chelsea and Newcastle United no longer in the running, according to The Telegraph.

Liverpool’s Defensive Priority

The Premier League champions have already enjoyed a stellar transfer window, bringing in Jeremie Frimpong, Florian Wirtz, Hugo Ekitike, and Milos Kerkez. While a move for Newcastle striker Alexander Isak remains on their radar, Arne Slot is also pushing for a new centre-back before the transfer deadline.

Guehi, 24, has emerged as the leading target. Newcastle valued him at £65 million last summer but failed to tempt Palace into selling. With just one year left on his contract, his price tag has now dropped—The Sun claims Palace want £50 million, while Liverpool value him closer to £40 million. A compromise deal could soon be agreed.

Why Chelsea and Newcastle Stepped Aside

Chelsea, despite losing Levi Colwill to a serious knee injury, are not pursuing a reunion with their former academy graduate and have shifted their focus to alternative defensive options. Newcastle, meanwhile, are closing in on the signing of AC Milan’s Malick Thiaw, ending their pursuit of Guehi.

Why Guehi Fits Liverpool’s Plans

Guehi has developed into one of the Premier League’s most consistent defenders, even captaining Palace through his commanding performances and leadership. Liverpool’s current centre-back options are stretched—Virgil van Dijk and Ibrahima Konaté are first choice, with only Joe Gomez as senior backup.

Gomez’s injury history, coupled with Konaté’s refusal to sign a new deal and his own fitness concerns, makes adding a reliable, durable centre-back a priority. Guehi’s quality and experience could see him challenge for a starting spot immediately.

With Liverpool now having a clear run at the signing, a late-window move for Guehi looks increasingly likely.
