Paris Saint-Germain boss Luis Enrique hailed three of his players as the best in the world at their positions after witnessing his side come from a goal down to beat Barcelona despite a rash of injuries.
PSG were without Ousmane Dembele, Desire Doue, Kvicha Kvaratskhelia and Marquinhos for the game and then lost midfielder Joao Neves in the warm-up.
And it looked as if it would be a long night for the visitors when Ferran Torres slid Barcelona into a 19th-minute lead.
However, PSG responded superbly and 19-year-old Senny Mayulu, a goalscorer in the Champions League final back in May, fired them level seven minutes before half-time following an outstanding run through midfield from Nuno Mendes.
The turnaround was completed in the 90th minute when Goncalo Ramos calmly slotted home from Achraf Hakimi’s cross to make it two wins from two for the holders in the league phase.
Luis Enrique lauds PSG trio
And Hakimi was one of three Luis Enrique singled out for special praise after the game.
“What is clear is that, along with Pedri, Vitinha is the best midfielder in the world,” Luis Enrique said.
“Nuno Mendes and Hakimi? They are the two best full-backs in the world without a doubt. They are capable of anything.”
In addition to his goal, Mendes was able to keep Yamal relatively quiet after struggling against the Spain star in the first half. Similarly, Vitinha had a poor first half by his standards, but was influential in midfield as PSG largely dictated the game in the second.
Mendes was handed the Man of the Match award for his performance, with his efforts emblematic of the adaptability PSG showed as a team against one of the most fearsome sides in world football, albeit with Barca missing the likes of Raphinha and Fermin Lopez.
“Against Barca, it’s difficult not to panic, but you have to know how to adapt,” Luis Enrique added. “Last year, we overcame many difficulties, and today, we proved it again. It continues.
“We played with 17 or 18-year-olds, and it’s fantastic. We still believe in ourselves.”
PSG ‘lucky’ to have Mayulu
Mayulu looked as shocked as anyone in the stadium when he rounded off PSG’s 5-0 rout of Inter Milan in last season’s showpiece in Munich.
But he took his goal at Barcelona’s Olympic Stadium with supreme composure, with Luis Enrique declaring himself fortunate to have the teenager at his disposal in the absence of several of their more heralded attacking players.
“It was an excellent match,” Luis Enrique told Movistar Plus. “When you see two teams playing clean, trying to hurt each other by playing football, it’s a very complete match.
“They were superior until they scored the goal, but we recovered. Nuno made an incredible play. I think we were better in the second half.
“Mayulu has a lot of power, he brings so much to the table. He has a lot of quality and can play both inside and outside. I’m very lucky to have him.
“I’m happy because the problems don’t matter. It’s an important victory. Playing against Barca is always difficult. This result is important for our confidence.”
PSG face a difficult game in Ligue 1 on Sunday as they travel to Lille, with Luis Enrique’s side only ahead of Lyon at the top because of their superior goal difference.
They host Strasbourg in the first game after the international break, before resuming their Champions League defence with a trip to Bundesliga side Bayer Leverkusen.
