Red Devils Target Nottingham Forest Star to Bolster Defence
Manchester United are reportedly laying the groundwork for a major defensive overhaul, with Nottingham Forest’s Murillo emerging as their primary target to replace departing club captain Harry Maguire.
The 23-year-old Brazilian has been a revelation since his £15m move from Corinthians in 2023. Despite Forest’s mixed fortunes this season, Murillo has consistently delivered commanding performances at the City Ground, catching the attention of several Premier League giants.
Why United Want Murillo
According to Spanish outlet Fichajes, United are ‘preparing’ to meet Forest’s £70m asking price for the versatile defender. With Maguire’s contract expiring this summer and Lisandro Martínez’s ongoing injury concerns, strengthening the backline has become a priority at Old Trafford.

What makes Murillo particularly attractive is his adaptability. Primarily a left-footed centre-back, he can seamlessly slot into the left-back position when required. Despite not being the tallest defender, his combination of pace, aerial prowess, and physical strength makes him a formidable presence in the Premier League.
The Brazilian also ticks several boxes for modern football. He’s comfortable playing out from the back—crucial for Erik ten Hag’s possession-based approach—whilst remaining solid defensively. His ability to strike long-range passes adds another dimension to his game.
The Right Move for United?
At 23, Murillo represents exactly the type of investment United should be making. He’s already proven in the Premier League but has significant room for development, offering both immediate impact and long-term value.
Forest remain open to selling if their valuation is met, with Murillo’s contract running until 2029. For United, who famously paid £80m for Maguire in 2019, £70m for a younger, versatile defender with Premier League experience could prove shrewd business.
Whether this move materializes in January or next summer remains uncertain, but United’s interest signals their intent to rebuild around younger, dynamic talent.
