Manchester United have entered the race to sign Sporting CP left-back Maxi Araujo, according to a new report from A Bola in Portugal.
The Old Trafford side are the latest club to emerge as serious contenders for the 26-year-old Uruguay international, joining Chelsea and Tottenham Hotspur who have both already made active contact over a potential summer deal.
The interest makes sense when you look at what Araujo has produced this season given that he has played 35 matches across all competitions, starting 32 of them, and contributed six goals and four assists (it is nothing short of a remarkable output for a player operating predominantly as a left-back). And then to add to it, two goals and one assist in the Champions League have raised his profile further which puts him firmly on the radar of clubs operating at the top of European football.
Araujo’s numbers this season are the driving force behind the surge in interest.
Left-backs who contribute double figures in goal involvements across a full campaign are rare, and the fact that he has delivered those numbers while also performing consistently in the Champions League suggests this is not simply a product of playing in a comfortable domestic environment. He has been tested at the highest level and come through it with his reputation enhanced.
His own comments have also added fuel to the speculation as while in London with the Uruguay national team, Araujo spoke openly about his desire to play in England, saying he hopes his visit will be “the first of many.”
That kind of public statement rarely happens by accident, and it has only added to the growing sense that a Premier League move is firmly part of his thinking heading into the summer window.
Manchester United Maxi Araujo interest adds new dimension to left-back search
United’s arrival in the race for Araujo fits with their known need to address the left-back position this summer.
Luke Shaw’s persistent fitness issues have been a recurring problem at Old Trafford, and with the club expected to compete across four competitions next season, Michael Carrick needs reliable options at every position.
Araujo’s attacking output combined with his defensive solidity makes him an attractive solution, and his Champions League experience is exactly the kind of profile United look for when investing in that area of the pitch.
Alongside Maxi Araujo, United also have a possibility to land Bayern star Alphonso Davies.
Sporting CP Maxi Araujo has a hefty release clause, but United can land him on 50% discount
Sporting are not making this easy for anyone. The Portuguese club want to keep Araujo for at least one more season and are not actively looking to sell this summer. He is contracted until 2029, and while his release clause is set at €80 million, Sporting are believed to consider offers starting from around €40 million as a realistic entry point for serious negotiations. That gives them a strong hand, and they know it.
The World Cup could yet change the equation. Araujo’s profile is rising, his form is excellent, and a strong tournament with Uruguay this summer could push his market value higher still.
Sporting may find it increasingly difficult to hold firm if one of the three interested clubs decides to make a decisive move at the right moment.
For now, the expectation is that Sporting will look to maximise their return before agreeing to anything. A deal this summer looks possible but only if Manchester United, Chelsea, or Tottenham are willing to push hard enough to force the issue.
