When it comes to GOAT power couples, Megan Rapinoe and Sue Bird are undeniable royalty. Between the two of them, they have Olympic medals, championships, and awards galore. Not only are they icons in their sport, but they are also trailblazers in the queer community. Let’s get into it!
A Seattle Start
The two had been top players for their Seattle-based sports teams, Rapinoe with Reign and Bird with Storm, for years before getting together. Rapinoe and Bird have been in a relationship since late 2016, but their relationship wasn’t confirmed until July 2017.
Public Debuts and Cover Stories
They made their debut as the activist couple they are today at a Planned Parenthood benefit in August of that same year. In 2018, they became the first same sex couple to be cover models for ESPN’s The Body Issue. The next year, they made the cover of InStyle.
Post-Career Passion
2020 was a big year for the couple as they announced their engagement and started their podcast, A Touch More, which talks all things women’s sports and culture. Since their retirements over the past couple of years, Rapinoe and Bird have focused solely on their brands and passions. They have traveled the world, giving talks, raising money and awareness, and doing the most with their platforms.
Still Going Strong
Most recently, you may have heard rumors about a change in their relationship, that someone had come between them. Well, the rumors are true, Sue was spotted with none other than Doppler, the beloved Storm mascot. But at the very next game the three were looking pretty cozy all together. All jokes aside, we love seeing these two kick butt, even after they’ve left their respective sports, and can’t wait for the full wedding photo shoot one of these days.
