Methodist Falls on the Road to Southern Virginia

BUENA VISTA, Va.  The Methodist women’s soccer team visited USA South counterpart Southern Virginia University on Saturday afternoon, with the Monarchs coming out on the losing end of a 4–0 decision to the Knights inside Knight Stadium.

JUST THE FACTS

Final score: Southern Virginia def. Methodist, 4–0

Records: Methodist 2-2-6 (1-2-2 USA South), Southern Virginia 6-5-1 (5-0-0 USA South)

Location: Knight Stadium; Buena Vista, Virginia

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • The Knights struck first in the 22nd minute after being awarded a penalty kick. A Methodist foul inside the 18-yard box gave Hailey Gadd a chance from the spot, and she converted to give Southern Virginia a 1–0 advantage.
  • After halftime, the Knights wasted little time adding to their lead. In the 50th minute, Courtney Montes sent a ball through to Xoie Warner, who slipped her shot past the Methodist keeper to make it 2–0.
  • Momentum remained with Southern Virginia as it tacked on two more goals in quick succession. In the 55th minute, Natalie Blaser assisted Delin Peterson for the third tally of the day before Montes and Warner connected once again just two minutes later to seal the 4–0 decision.

NUMBERS

  • Southern Virginia outshot Methodist 18–2, including a 7–1 edge in shots on goal.
  • This marked the first time in series history that the Monarchs conceded more than one goal to the Knights.
