The NWSL is home to some of the most talented players in the world, and this season has been no different, especially on the defensive side of the ball. Here are 10 NWSL defenders you need to watch:
Emily Sams (Orlando Pride)
The reigning 2024 NWSL Defender of the Year, Sams was a linchpin for an Orlando Pride defense that tied for the fewest goals conceded in the league. She anchored a backline that set a new league record for consecutive minutes without a goal conceded, at 554 minutes. Her contract with Orlando extends until 2027, so be prepared for more records with Sams.
Casey Krueger (Washington Spirit)
A veteran star, Krueger’s experience is invaluable to the Washington Spirit. The Olympic Gold Medalist is known for her tenacity in winning tackles. In May, she won NWSL’s Best XI of the Month for the 15th time in her career.
Kaleigh Kurtz (North Carolina Courage)
A three-time NWSL ironwoman, Kurtz is a workhorse for the Courage. She’s a consistent presence on the backline, known for her passing accuracy and ability to break up plays with key interceptions. She has also officially tied the NWSL’s record for consecutive regular-season starts and, in 2024, broke the NWSL record for passes completed in a season.
Gisele Thompson (Angel City FC)
Teenager star Gisele Thompson has already proven to be a powerhouse defender. Her impressive defensive skills, combined with a strong attacking mindset and exceptional speed, make her one of the most exciting young defenders in the league. In June 2025, Thompson was named NWSL Best XI of the month.
Sarah Gorden (Angel City FC)
Two-time NWSL Best XI selection, Sarah Gorden, is the glue and foundation of Angel City’s back line. As LA’s Captain and star defender, she is known for her speed, agility, and skillful interceptions. Gorden’s leadership on and off the field is clearly part of Angel City’s magic.
Abby Dahlkemper (Bay FC)
A veteran USWNT defender, Dahlkemper brings a wealth of experience to Bay FC. Formerly of the San Diego Wave, she is known for her awareness and defensive organization. She’s a force to be reckoned with and a key leader for the team’s defense.
Emily Sonnett (NJ/NY Gotham FC)
USWNT star Emily Sonnett’s physical and feisty playstyle makes her a tough defender for any attacker to face. Her versatility and leadership for both Gotham and the USWNT make her a cornerstone piece of any backline.
Michelle Alozie (Houston Dash)
Michelle Alozie is a fan favorite for a reason. The Dash’s aggressive right back is difficult to beat one-on-one and is a strong contributor to her team’s offense. She played for Nigeria to win the 2025 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations. In addition to her work on the pitch, Alozie also works part-time as cancer research technician at Texas Children’s Hospital.
Kate Del Fava (Utah Royals)
Iron Woman Kate Del Fava is a center back for the Royals, known for her ball control, defensive awareness, and speed. Previously a midfielder, Del Fava also has the unique ability to merge defensive skill and attacking power. Del Fava also takes the time to give back to underserved communities, earning her a nomination for Nationwide’s Lauren Holiday Impact Award, which recognizes players for outstanding service and character off the pitch.
Paige Nielsen (Houston Dash)
2024 Defender of the Year, Paige Nielsen, excels at defensive awareness, speed, and physicality of play. After a rough trade from Angel City FC, Nielsen is now a key part of the Dash’s organizational vision for the future, signing a contract until 2028.
These top players are serious contenders to watch in the NWSL this season and beyond. From key interceptions to defensive organization, these 10 contenders are sure to continue their star power in the seasons to come.
