Ange Postecoglou has issued a defiant message to his critics, insisting that his best work as a manager is still ahead of him.
The former Tottenham and Nottingham Forest boss spoke openly with SEN about his recent Premier League setbacks, characterising them as necessary “whacks” in a long and storied career.
Despite being sacked twice in 2025, Postecoglou maintains that his passion for the game and his drive to achieve silverware remain completely unchanged.
The Australian’s recent track record in England is a study in contrasts. At Tottenham, he delivered the club’s first trophy in 17 years by winning the Europa League, only to be dismissed due to poor league form.
His subsequent stint at Nottingham Forest lasted only 39 days and eight winless matches. “You can’t always be flying high and successful,” Postecoglou explained.
“Sometimes you need to cop a couple of whacks. It didn’t leave any marks on me as a person or a football manager.”
Postecoglou won’t let Premier League ‘whacks’ define him
Reflecting on his 28-year career, Postecoglou remains grounded. He dismissed the idea that the “brutal” nature of his Forest exit or the reputational damage in the Premier League would deter him from future high-pressure roles.
“I have this thing in my head that this will be the best one I’ve done yet because the recent experiences, maybe I needed them,” he said, before adding: “I still feel like what I do still has an impact at this level. I’m not done yet, mate! There’s still a bit to do.”
The 60-year-old noted that his age and experience have allowed him to take responsibility for his choices without letting them affect his self-worth.
As both Nottingham Forest and Tottenham Hotspur continue to struggle near the bottom of the table, Postecoglou’s stock remains high in other markets.
His success with Celtic and the Australian national team ensures he remains a sought-after figure globally.
For now, Postecoglou is waiting for a role that offers the right “fit,” armed with the lesson that seeking counsel is vital before “biting off more than he can chew.”
His message to the football world is clear: the “Angeball” era is far from over.
