Hearts of Oak defender David Oppong Afrane has admitted that the team felt more comfortable playing away from home due to intense pressure and abusive language from a section of their own supporters.
Speaking on their turbulent domestic campaign, the former Ghana U23 international highlighted a psychological barrier confronting the squad at home.
“Hearts of Oak felt more comfortable away because of pressure and abusive language from some home fans,” Afrane told Kessben TV.
“Without it, we agree with the criticism on reflection, as wins are their only source of happiness,” he added.
The statement reflects a growing awareness within the squad regarding the high stakes of playing for one of Ghana’s most decorated clubs.
Under the guidance of head coach Mas-Ud Didi Dramani, Hearts of Oak accumulated 54 points from 34 matches.
While they proved exceptionally difficult to beat, losing only six times all season, their title ambitions were ultimately slowed down by a league-high 15 draws alongside 13 victories.
Despite the frustration of the stalemates, the Phobians closed out their campaign on a high note, delivering an emphatic 4â2 victory over newly crowned league champions Medeama SC on the final day.
