Real Madrid sign Spain defender from Chelsea in £51.8m transfer

Real Madrid have signed left-back Marc Cucurella from Chelsea for £51.8 million on a deal until 2032.

Cucurella joined the Blues from Brighton & Hove Albion for £63m in 2022 and made 163 appearances for the club, scoring nine goals and winning the Conference League and Club World Cup in 2025.

The 27-year-old, who is currently with Spain at the World Cup 2026, will cost an initial £47.5m plus £4.3m in add-ons, according to BBC Sport.

Marc Cucurella: Why Madrid have signed Spain defender

Cucurella, who came through Barcelona’s set-up and played one game for Madrid’s arch rivals in the 2017/18 Copa del Rey, is Spain’s first-choice left-back.

New Madrid boss Jose Mourinho identified Cucurella as the player he wanted on the left side of defence, where the Portuguese is reportedly seeking an overhaul at a club who finished 2025/26 without a trophy.

Madrid have Alvaro Carreras, Fran Garcia and Ferland Mendy among their left-back option, but Mendy is set to be sidelined until April 2026 with a detached hamstring tendon, while there is speculation surrounding the futures of Carreras and Garcia, with reports suggesting Mourinho views both as surplus to requirements.

Madrid have agreed a deal to sign Netherlands right-back Denzel Dumfries from Inter, while France centre-back Ibrahima Konate has a verbal agreement to join Los Blancos when his Liverpool contract expires at the end of the month.
