Manchester United are actively exploring options to sign a new goalkeeper this summer, with Real Madrid’s Andriy Lunin emerging as a prime target.
After a shaky debut season from André Onana and limited confidence in back-up Altay Bayındır, the Red Devils are eager to reinforce their goalkeeping department. According to Defensa Central, United have approached Lunin’s agent, Jorge Mendes, to initiate talks over a potential transfer.
United Face Madrid’s Steep Asking Price
United are reportedly prepared to offer around £13 million, but Real Madrid are demanding closer to £21 million, reflecting Lunin’s long-term contract, which runs until 2029. The 25-year-old Ukrainian is currently second-choice behind Thibaut Courtois but remains content with his role at the Bernabéu.
Despite limited starts, Lunin has shown glimpses of his top-tier potential. With Courtois turning 33 this year, Lunin may continue to get regular minutes in domestic cups and select La Liga or Champions League matches.
No European Football a Major Blow for United
One major stumbling block for Manchester United is their lack of European football next season. Their worst-ever Premier League finish, coupled with a defeat to Tottenham in the Europa League final, has left them without any continental competition for 2025/26. This could deter Lunin, who is likely to prioritise a club playing in Europe.
Chelsea Lurking as Alternative Destination
If Lunin does consider leaving Madrid, a move to a more competitive project could appeal. Chelsea are reportedly in the market for a new first-choice goalkeeper as new manager Enzo Maresca seeks to upgrade on Robert Sánchez. The Blues’ participation in Europe and more promising trajectory could tip the scales in their favour.
Verdict
While Manchester United are keen and could offer Lunin the No. 1 shirt, their current sporting situation may not be attractive enough. Unless they can match Madrid’s valuation and convince Lunin with a compelling project, they face stiff competition—especially from clubs like Chelsea with stronger sporting appeal.
