Referees are paid GHC1,100 per game – RAG General Secretary reveals amid 21-week delay
Referees officiating in Ghanas top football competitions are paid GH1,100 per match, but many have gone over five months without receiving their allowances, according to the General Secretary of the Referees Association of Ghana (RAG), Alex Anning.Speaking to Sporty FM, Anning confirmed that referees are owed for 21 weeks of match officiating across the Ghana Premier League, Division One League, Womens League, and the MTN FA Cup. He revealed that although each match earns a referee GH1,100, payment has not been consistent.Referees are paid GHC1,100 per game, but we have only been paid for eight out of the 29 weeks of the Ghana Premier League season, Anning said. That means 21 weeks of allowances are still outstanding. The payment delay has led to growing frustration among referees, some of whom are reportedly struggling to meet basic personal expenses despite working weekly matches.Although RAG has denied reports of an official decision to boycott matches, there is increasing pressure within the refereeing community. Anning noted that discussions with the Ghana Football Association (GFA) have failed to resolve the matter, prompting plans to escalate the issue to the Ministry of Youth and Sports. It seems the GFA doesnt understand us, which is why were taking the issue to the Sports Minister, he stated.

In response, GFA President Kurt Okraku has acknowledged the challenge and assured that efforts are being made to address the arrears.

He confirmed that the association is actively working on clearing the outstanding payments to referees and remains committed to resolving the situation.
