EFL Championship club Middlesbrough already has one U.S. Men’s National Team midfielder in Aidan Morris and is reportedly nearing a deal to secure a second.
Sebastian Berhalter is set to join Middlesbrough in a permanent transfer from the Vancouver Whitecaps, Teesside Live reported Thursday. The Whitecaps will reportedly secure a $2.66 million (£2 million) transfer fee for Berhalter’s services as the American embarks to join his former club teammate Morris in England’s second-tier.
Berhalter had been linked with a move to England this summer as his contract with the Whitecaps winds down. The 25-year-old midfielder originally made his MLS debut with the Crew in 2020 before later joining Austin FC for one year.
Berhalter has since made his name with the Whitecaps, scoring 20 goals and adding 26 assists in 167 appearances for the Canadian club. The son of former USMNT player and head coach Gregg, Sebastian debuted for the National Team in 2025 and has earned 18 caps to date.
He most recently featured at the 2026 FIFA World Cup under Mauricio Pochettino as the USMNT reached the Round of 16 before suffering elimination to Belgium.
Berhalter will now be reunited with Morris, who himself is heading into his third season with Middlesbrough.
Kim Hellberg’s squad lost to Hull City 1-0 in the EFL Championship Promotion Playoff Final last May. Middlesbrough originally suffered elimination to Southampton in the semifinals but were allowed to compete in the final after the Saints were expelled by the EFL for spying on their opponents.
Boro will open their competitive schedule against Wrexham in the Carabao Cup first round on August 7 before hosting Lincoln City in their EFL Championship opener eight days later.
