(Photo by Julian Finney – FIFA/FIFA via Getty Images)The Ghana Football Association (GFA) has already started the process to hire a new head coach of the Black Stars.This is due to Carlos Queiroz’s unwillingness to extend his stay after guiding the team to the 2026 World Cup.The veteran Portuguese trainer was appointed in April earlier this year ahead of the Mundial in North America, replacing Otto Addo on a short-term deal.Queiroz, a former Iran and Egypt head coach, was on an $80,000 monthly salary according to the Minister of Sports and Recreation, Kofi Adams, but negotiations with the 73-year-old to extend his stay broke down with the Ghana FA and other stakeholders after he demanded a whopping $150,000 monthly salary before extending his stay.It is believed that Queiroz is said to have requested additional foreign members for his technical team as part of his plans for continuity with the Black Stars.The demands by the experienced trainer have forced the Ghana Football Association (GFA) to look elsewhere for a new head coach to take over the team.However, multiple media reports have suggested that first team assistant coach Desmond Ofei is leading the race to be named the head coach of the senior national team.If a new head coach is appointed, it will be the seventh coach that has been appointed under Kurt Okraku’s administration as GFA president.With the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifiers fast approaching, the GFA is under increasing pressure to resolve the coaching situation and provide clarity before the Black Stars regroup.Ghana are scheduled to return to competitive action in September when they begin their qualification campaign for the 2027 AFCON, having missed the previous edition of the tournament in Morocco.The Black Stars have been drawn in Group C alongside Ivory Coast, The Gambia and Somalia.
