From sliding into each other’s Instagram DMs during lockdown, Sam Kerr and Kristie Mewis have become soccer’s most beloved soccer power couple. Let’s take a look at their relationship timeline from all the way back to 2019 to the present!
The Beginning
The couple had first connected through each other’s Instagram DM’s after playing each other’s international teams back in 2019. From there, they continued talking mainly online due to the COVID-19 Pandemic. Due to quarantine, their first date ended up being two weeks long!
The Hard Launch
If we could give an award to the couple with the most iconic hard launch story, it would be Sam Kerr and Kristie Mewis. In 2021, their relationship came into the public eye after pictures of them surfaced following the US beating Australia at the Tokyo Olympics. The meme that was born from these pictures lives on in internet infamy. In the photos, Mewis is comforting Kerr, and one Twitter user commented, quote “friendship has no boundaries! Win or lose, friends are still friends.” This elicited the swift response, “They’re lesbians, Stacey.” Only a few days later, Kerr confirmed the suspicions (and enshrined the aforementioned meme in the hall of fame) by posting a Polaroid of her and Mewis kissing.
New Teams
The two were long-distance for several years, with Kerr in London for Chelsea and Mewis playing stateside for the NWSL. Then, in 2023, Mewis signed with West Ham United and the couple announced their engagement. Well, first they teased the entire internet with a few hints at their engagement for several weeks, and then they showed us the official engagement photos.
Now in the same league and city, Mewis and Kerr were together full-time for the first time in their relationship and were always in love. Though their careers began to hit some bumps, with injuries for both of them throughout the next few years, their relationship continued to thrive. These two are endlessly supportive of one another while also unafraid of being brutally honest about their gameplay. In November of last year, Mewis and Kerr announced that they were expecting their first baby in an adorable photo booth grid of pictures featuring the happy couple and Mewis’s belly.
Starting A Family
Their son, Jagger Mewis-Kerr, was born in May of 2025. Since then, Mewis’s contract with West Ham has expired, and Kerr has made her way back to the pitch, with her wife and their baby cheering her on from the sidelines. Mewis is currently taking some time to be a mom full-time after a lot of injuries in her last few years, and Kerr is getting back to where she was before knee surgery. Motherhood looks so good on these two, and we can’t wait to see what kind of party their eventual wedding will be like!
