As the most beloved international game out there, it makes sense that soccer would have a far-reaching impact, even outside of sports. In the last few years, we’ve been seeing trends that have made it clear that soccer is directly influencing fashion. So many of our favorite soccer stars are becoming more and more well-known for their fashion sense and tastes these days. Let’s take a look at a few examples of soccer streetwear and how the game is shaping a global industry.
#BootsOnlySummer
You may have seen it on TikTok or Instagram this summer, and it may seem crazy to a soccerista, but #BootsOnlySummer is very much a thing. People have been click-clacking all over the place, wearing their boots all around town. They were even seen strutting down the carpet at the Met Gala by Spanish singer Rosalía.
Jerseys
You can see someone sporting a kit almost anywhere these days. From the grocery store to the club, there doesn’t seem to be a place where a soccer jersey doesn’t fit. These are usually pro jerseys with big names on them, like Messi, Rodman, Ronaldo, or Rapinoe. It’s hard to say whether it’s cooler to be a soccer player or to just look like one, but they’re hard to miss.
Sambas
Speaking of looking like a soccer player versus being one, the rise of Sambas is also thanks to soccer. Before people started walking around in their boots (which, again, is not good for you or your shoes), they were wearing Sambas instead. They’re a great shoe that still has that cleat vibe to them, and they are iconic.
Fashion sponsorships and collaborations
Athletic brands sponsoring athletes is a time-honored tradition, but now fashion brands are starting to get into the game. Croix Bethune recently did a gear haul for the streetwear brand Supreme. And this goes for fashion houses collaborating with athletic brands as well, like the boots Adidas and Prada put out together a few years ago.
Game day accessorizing
There is a lot to be said about a game day accessory. Recently, we have been seeing more and more soccer players take the pitch dripping with jewelry. Earrings, necklaces, and even the occasional tooth gem, seeing your favorite players take the pitch all decked out makes people wonder where they got this or that piece. Whether for luck or style, the on-pitch jewelry game has completely changed in the last few years. Now that players are more likely to play a game dressed to the nines, spectators are more likely to want to do the same, on and off the pitch.
