Spanish Stars to Watch in the NWSL

International players in the NWSL have had an immense impact this season. With Spain being the reigning women’s World Cup champions, there’s no doubt that Spanish players have shown remarkable skill in the league. Here we will look at some of the skillful Spanish players in the NWSL.

Esther Gonzalez (NJ/NY Gotham)

It only makes sense to begin the list with goalscorer Gonzalez. She has been on fire and leads the league in goals scored with 7. Although Gotham sits in the middle of the standings, Gonzalez has been a bolt of electricity for them, and she shows no sign of dwindling.

Maitane Lopez (Chicago Stars)

In her first season with the Chicago Stars, Maitane has held the midfield down with her length and technique. She is no stranger to big moments and has many achievements under her previous clubs. Maitane played a pivotal role in helping Gotham secure the 2023 NWSL Championship. She is under contract with the Stars until 2026.

Celia Jimenez (Orlando Pride)

Celia has been a key component for the Orlando Pride since 2022. Despite Pride’s offensive excellence with Marta and Banda, much of their 2024 championship run relied on a steady defense. Celia has contributed to the squad’s success with great defensive awareness and skill. Pride’s backline is a mix of strength, skill, and speed, and Celia adds to the mix perfectly.

Ana Tejada (Utah Royals)

Even though the Royals are nowhere near the top of the table, Tejada is a player the club needs to keep on its roster if success is the goal. So far, she has received two yellow cards, showing her defensive tenacity. Tejada is an elite competitor and has had a positive impact on all the organizations she has played for.

Claudia Zornoza (Utah Royals)

Despite Utah’s losing record, the team contains a handful of impactful players, such as Zornoza. Her on-ball skill speaks for itself. Zornoza swirled in a goal from outside the box earlier this year and it’s still mesmerizing to rewatch.

Oihane Hernandez (Orlando Pride)

Oihane adds another dynamic layer to Pride’s defense. She was crucial in Spain’s 2023 World Cup Championship run. Although positioned in the backline, her ability to create opportunities for her teammates is remarkable. With only five games under her belt for Orlando, she already recorded an assist.
