After an impressive start to the season, Sports Illustrated named Angel City FC forward Sveindís Jónsdóttir as their first National Womens Soccer League (NWSL) MVP of the Month.
“I am so happy to receive this honor and be the first ever,” Jónsdóttir said to Sports Illustrated. “Hopefully, there is more to come!”
Sports Illustrated launched the new award after the first month of the NWSL season to highlight players who have made significant impacts on their team that month.
Jónsdóttir is currently in her second season with Angel City FC (ACFC). She was born in Iceland, where she became an impactful member of the womens national team. In 2021, Jónsdóttir was also named the Icelandic Women’s Footballer of the Year.
After spending most of her professional career in Germany, Jónsdóttir made the transition to the NWSL. In 2025, she signed with ACFC through 2027. Last season, she recorded 12 starts and scored her first NWSL goal in September 2025. While she used her first NWSL season to find her footing, Jónsdóttir has busted onto the scene in 2026.
As the first recipient of the award, Jónsdóttir has set the bar high. In the month of March, she led the league in goals scored and recorded two assists. The NWSL also rewarded Jónsdóttir for her early-season success, naming her to the Best XI of the Month and Player of the Month.
To add to the individual accolades, Jónsdóttir helped her team go undefeated during the first month of the season. ACFC was the only team without a loss in March, but has since dropped a game to the Orlando Pride. They currently sit at no. 3 in the NWSL standings.
Jónsdóttir is the first of many talented players to win Sports Illustrated’s NWSL MVP of the Month and set the tone for future winners.
