One day after American midfielder Johnny Cardoso was diagnosed with an ankle injury, Tanner Tessmann has followed suit with his own frustrating issue.
Tessmann will miss Lyon’s remaining Ligue 1 matches due to a muscle injury, manager Paulo Fonseca confirmed Friday. The 24-year-old has not been ruled out for the upcoming FIFA World Cup, but could very well miss the competition if he does not recover by the end of May.
“Tanner has a muscle strain,” Fonseca said in a club interview. “He will not play until the end of the season.”
Tessmann was in the final weeks of his second season with Lyon after joining from Italian club Venezia in the Summer of 2024. A former FC Dallas academy player, made the move to Europe in 2021 and played at Venezia for three seasons before joining Lyon.
Tessmann scored two goals in 41 appearances for Lyon this season, featuring in the UEFA Europa League, as well as Ligue 1 and the Coupe De France competition.
On the international level, Tessmann debuted for the U.S. men’s national team in 2021 and has since earned 14 caps. He featured in both of the program’s March friendlies against Portugal and Belgium.
Lyon will take a trip to Toulouse on Sunday before concluding its league schedule at home against Lens on May 17.
USMNT head coach Mauricio Pochettino is slated to announce his World Cup roster on May 26, five days before the Americans take on Senegal in Charlotte, NC. The USMNT will also face Germany in Chicago, Ill. in what will be their final pre-World Cup friendly.
