Liverpool head coach Gareth Taylor was pleased to see his side record a 2-0 Merseyside derby victory over Everton at Anfield on Sunday afternoon.
Beata Olsson and Cornelia Kapcos got the goals as Liverpool ended their long wait for a home derby victory in the Barclays Women’s Super League.
When speaking to the media after the match, Liverpool boss Taylor shared his thoughts on his side’s important win.
“It’s really nice,” Taylor said. “You never get everything your own way in a Merseyside derby, I thought there were moments where we were fairly convincing, but I suppose when you’re one nil for a large part of the game, [it’s a dangerous scoreline]. It was four minutes for Beata’s goal and then four minutes from the end for Kappy’s [Cornelia Kapocs].
“I’m just pleased for the players because I think it reinforces the confidence levels that what we’re doing is the right way of going. I thought we were good in the first half, gave up a little bit of territory, but still created a lot of chances. I thought Natalia [Ramos] could have had a hat-trick and should be going home with a match ball.
“There were big performances out there, everyone stood up when they needed to. It’s just brilliant for us to get the result and share that moment with our support.”
Liverpool play two more games before heading into an international break and Taylor says that there is still work to be done.
He said “We’ve got a quick turnaround again now. We play another two games in the next five days; we play Wednesday, we play Saturday. That’s a big turnaround for us because we’ve still got a couple of players to come back.
“We don’t want to stand still and that’s the whole club really. We want to improve and get better and we’re moving in the right direction. The team’s moving up the league which is good, but we’ve still got a lot of work to do.”
Two of the stand-out players in the match were goalscorer Olsson and attacking midfielder Natalia Ramos. Taylor only had positive words for both players.
He said “It’s nice for Beata to get a goal because I know she’s just so hungry for goals. I was a striker and I know how she feels, but she gives so much more in her game. It was brilliant for her to get one at Anfield and I feel that will give her a lot of confidence going into the next few games.
“People enjoy watching Natalia play because she’s very humble, very open to learning, even at 27 years old. She’s been a ray of sunshine coming into this group because she’s very caring, very honest, very open. She’s just a brilliant teammate.
Liverpool’s next fixture sees them travel to St. Andrew’s @ Knighthead Park to face Birmingham City in the Subway Players Cup on Wednesday evening.
