Top 10 Goals of April: NWSL, Champions League, and Liga F

We’re back with our monthly edition of Top 10 Goals. This month’s best of the best features goals from the NWSL, Women’s Champions League, and Liga F. Here’s the Top 10 from April!

10. Ashley Sanchez – North Carolina Courage

When North Carolina took on Kansas City last week, it appeared that Kansas City was going to cruise to another victory. North Carolina showed that, in spite of a tough start to the season, they have a “never say die” mentality. Their hard work brought them back to 2-2 before Ashley Sanchez found a way to score the game winner. Sanchez said in the postgame interview that her first touch wasn’t the best, but her quick feet made up for it. Sanchez fired the shot past the outstretched arm of the keeper for a win that might turn North Carolina’s season around.

9. Kenza Dali – San Diego Wave

Kenza Dali’s signing flew under the radar for San Diego, but she’s given them a huge boost as a veteran presence in the locker room. Dali has been known as a free kick specialist, and she showed exactly why with this strike. The angle isn’t favorable, given the ball’s proximity to the 18-yard box. Dali did incredibly well to get the ball over the wall and back down, the accuracy was perfect too, with the keeper having no chance.

8. Cláudia Pina – FC Barcelona

This was the piece of Barca magic that put the game away for Barcelona against Chelsea in the first leg of the Champions League Semifinals. Cláudia Pina has been unplayable, but this goal is more about the backheel assist from Alexia Putellas. This is the kind of goal that sums up Barcelona’s style in a nutshell. The ability to operate in tight spaces, with a single pass capable of unlocking a defense, and the finishing touch to follow. Barcelona doesn’t look like they can be stopped.

7. Reilyn Turner- Portland Thorns

The UCLA Bruins connection has been strong for the Portland Thorns. Not only is Reilyn Turner playing well, but rookie Jayden Perry is giving the team great minutes. Perry showed her skill with this sublime assist, along with a great header from Turner. Perry struck this ball from midfield! All you have to do is admire the flight of the ball as it gets to Reilyn Turner’s head. Of course, Turner still had to beat out two defenders and show that she wanted it more, but Perry’s ball is immaculate; it’s a great goal all around.

6. Leicy Santos – Washington Spirit

Leicy Santos has become a key player for the Washington Spirit, especially considering Trinity Rodman’s unfortunate back issues. Santos shows exactly why the team brought her in, because she has the ability to do things like this. The angle was there for her to bend the ball, but the amount of curl she got on the shot makes it incredible to watch. The ball clanged off the post and in. The Colombian international brings another level of skill to the Spirit locker room.

5. Delanie Sheehan – Houston Dash

Delanie Sheehan left Gotham for Houston as a free agent, bringing championship experience to the team. Sheehan is as underrated as it gets in the league today. Her technique is perfect on this play. The Royals defender ripped this clearance but got no air under it. Sheehan managed to trap it and quickly put her foot through the ball before anyone could react. It’s a clean strike that ended up in the top corner, a beautiful goal.

4. Kiki Pickett – Bay FC

Kiki Pickett scoring bangers is becoming a common theme for Bay FC. The Stanford grad has experienced a career resurgence since returning to the Bay. Joelle Anderson did well to find Pickett in space, and as soon as she took the ball down, Pickett had one thought in her mind: to go for goal. Someone must have made her angry because she struck this volley with venom; the ball flew off the crossbar and in, a stunning finish.

3. Cláudia Pina – FC Barcelona

Barcelona has an embarrassment of riches, including Cláudia Pina. She might be the third or fourth player that comes to mind, but she’s truly something special. Pina is approaching the same level as Bonmati and Putellas, and is only 23 years of age. Pina dismantled Chelsea’s backline on multiple occasions over the two legs, and this goal was the icing on the cake. You could argue that Chelsea’s defenders need to get closer, but they were daring Pina to try and bend it in from there. That’s exactly what she did, all the goalie could do was watch the ball go in.

2. Mariona Caldentey – Arsenal

I’ve watched this clip about five times, and I’m still thinking about how Mariona Caldentey found the net here. Three Lyon defenders are forming a wall around her, and in the one sliver of daylight she had, she managed to fire the shot away. Even then, Caldentey fakes the shot and barely has her feet set before hitting the top corner. Rarely will you see a goal scored with three players directly in front of her, but Mariona Caldentey has the skill to do it.

1. Patri – FC Barcelona

Should I even be surprised that Cláudia Pina provided the assist for this goal? She’s been unreal. However, this goal is more about the brilliance of Patri and her one-touch finish. Similar to the previous goal, I’m still trying to figure out how in the world Patri backheel flicked this in with her body facing away from the goal. Anytime you see a player score a goal like that, it’s pure instinct and imagination coming together. Very few players are capable of making contact on a backheel flick like that, let alone scoring it. Patri was barely looking at the goal, it almost looks like a no-look goal, which is insane. The football IQ and ingenuity are top-notch, Barcelona at their finest.
