The new season of the National Women’s Soccer League is already looking really promising. We have had some super entertaining games, and this campaign is already looking like it’s going to be one for the books, and most of it is thanks to certain players. After just 9 matchdays, there are some players who are already lighting up the league. And in this article, we want to look at some of those players who lead the league in certain stats so far.
We’ll begin with the most important stat in the game:
Goals
At the top of the standings is Esther González. The Spanish striker who plays for Gotham FC currently leads the race for the Golden Boot with 7 goals so far.
Then at number 2, we have a 4-way tie between Ashley Hatch of Washington Spirit, Debinha of KC Current, Riley Tiernan of Angel City FC, and Temwa Chawinga of KC Current.
Who will go ahead to claim the Golden Boot at the end of the season? It’s anyone’s guess, really. But we’re sure many fans have already started placing their bets on one of the aforementioned players to walk home with the award at the end of matchday 26.
It’s super fun to follow along with the statistics. It makes the game more enjoyable. Many people even enjoy betting on women’s soccer if they understand how to.
Let’s now look at the stat leaders for assists in the NWSL.
Assists
Well, nothing separates the top 5 in this segment. Delphine Cascarino of San Diego Wave, Kennedy Fuller of Angel City FC, Perle Moroni of San Diego Wave, Rosemonde Kouassi of Washington Spirit, and Ryan Gareis of Houston Dash are all tied on 3 assists.
So it might be a little more difficult to predict who will end up as the leader of this category at the end of the season.
Now to the stats nobody wants to lead:
Red cards
So far, only two players have received their marching orders this season: Kennedy Wesley of San Diego Wave and Mandy Freeman of Gotham FC. They have each been sent off just once this season.
Yellow cards
But we have 3 players who have received 4 yellow cards each, the most in the league so far:
Jaelin Howell of Gotham FC, Rachael Kundananji of Bay FC, and Reyna Reyes of Portland Thorns. After them, we have about 9 players who have received 3 bookings each.
But as you know, the most important statistic in the league is points on the board, and right now, KC Current has the most with 21, 4 points ahead of San Diego Wave in second place.
After 9 games, KC Current is the only team yet to lose a single game. Will they keep up this pace and go on to win the league championship for the first time in their history? Time will tell!
