Amid all the central midfield speculation swirling around Chelsea this summer, one name deserves more attention than it’s currently getting, Fabian Ruiz.
What Fabian Ruiz brings to Chelsea?
While reported interest in defensive-minded options has grabbed headlines, Ruiz offers something genuinely different and arguably something this Chelsea midfield has lacked for a while.
Unlike a pure defensive screen, Ruiz profiles as a box-to-box midfielder, comfortable driving forward with the ball as well as recycling possession. At 6’2″, he also brings that much needed physical dimension, height and aerial presence that’s been a recurring gap in Chelsea’s engine room.
He is someone who can compete in the air as well as on the ground adds a dimension that’s easy to overlook until it’s missing in a crucial moment.
Beyond the physical profile, Ruiz also brings a level of proven pedigree that few alternatives can match.
He’s won major honours at both club and international level, forming part of a Spain side that’s enjoyed a golden run of success over the past decade or so. That experience matters in a squad still being rebuilt around a new head coach’s ideas, a ready-made presence who understands what winning football looks like, rather than a developing talent who needs time to adapt.
Technically, his game stands out too. His long diagonal passing range and ability to strike from distance give Chelsea a different attacking outlet from midfield, and there’s a strong case that his all-round profile would complement Moises Caicedo more naturally than adding a second deep-lying, primarily defensive midfielder to the mix.
He also carries the ball forward well and offers some of the deep-lying playmaking qualities Chelsea currently rely on Enzo Fernandez for not an exact match, but not a drastic drop-off either, which matters given the ongoing uncertainty over Fernandez’s own future at the club.
Will Chelsea pay hefty fee for a thirty-year old though?
The obvious complicating factor is age. At 30, a move for Ruiz likely represents a couple of seasons of service rather than a long-term investment, and reported fees in the region of £50 million reflect that reality.
But Chelsea have already shown a willingness to spend at that kind of level for experienced, ready-made quality this summer, and unlike some of those additions, there’d be little debate about Ruiz’s readiness to walk straight into the starting eleven from day one, particularly valuable if a departure elsewhere in midfield does materialise before the window shuts.
It’s not the flashiest name in the conversation, and it hasn’t generated the same volume of transfer noise as some of the alternatives being floated. But on merit, profile, and fit, Fabian Ruiz looks like exactly the kind of signing that could quietly transform Chelsea’s midfield and put them in genuine title contention without much of the fanfare currently attached to other targets.
