Manchester United are among the clubs monitoring Nottingham Forest captain Morgan Gibbs-White, with TEAMtalk reporting interest from Man United alongside Tottenham, Arsenal, Manchester City and Chelsea, as well as a number of elite European clubs, while Forest have made clear they would require an extraordinary offer to even consider a sale.
The interest in Gibbs-White comes alongside United’s more widely reported pursuit of West Ham’s Mateus Fernandes, but the two players represent very different profiles and price points. Fernandes, at 21, is being pursued as part of a succession plan for Bruno Fernandes, with West Ham demanding in the region of £80 to £85 million for the midfielder following their relegation to the Championship. Morgan Gibbs-White, by contrast, represents an already proven, high-level Premier League operator with a price tag that could exceed even the £120 million Forest are reportedly seeking for Elliot Anderson.
Why Morgan Gibbs-White is the most Bruno-like player in the Premier League
Perhaps the most striking stretch of form came at the end of the campaign, when Morgan Gibbs-White scored six goals in Forest’s final five league games, including a deft finish in a 3-2 thriller against United at Old Trafford, diverting Elliot Anderson’s cross into the far corner past Senne Lammens. Across the last two seasons combined, he created 15 big chances as a reflection of his sustained creative impact, a figure that compares favourably to the nine big chances Mateus Fernandes created across the same period.
How Gibbs-White compares to Mateus Fernandes
However, the statistical comparison between the two players at this stage is not flattering for Fernandes. He registered seven goals and assists last season after recording just six goal involvements during his solitary campaign at Southampton, with both clubs suffering relegation. Gibbs-White’s output, consistency and proven quality over an extended Premier League period represents a clear upgrade on what the younger player has produced to date.
Man United have seemingly moved away from joining the bidding for Anderson, who is Manchester City-bound, with focus shifting to both Fernandes and Gibbs-White as the primary midfield targets this summer. The challenge is that Forest have no desire to sell their captain and talisman, meaning any deal would require a fee that could push the boundaries of what United have spent on any individual player.
