While playing shutout defense, the Methodist women’s soccer team simultaneously struggled offensively in Saturday’s season opener at home, resulting in 90 minutes of scoreless soccer as the Monarchs went head to head with Eastern Mennonite University. It’s the team’s first 0–0 draw since 2018.
JUST THE FACTS
Final score: Methodist ties Eastern Mennonite, 0-0
Records: Methodist 0-0-1, Eastern Mennonite 0-1-1
Location: Duggins Soccer Stadium; Fayetteville, N.C.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- The lack of goals for Methodist wasn’t due to a lack of shots. The Monarchs fired 18 shots in total — six in the first half and 12 in the second. Allye Carter, Alex Hyde and Rory Patchett each forced Eastern Mennonite’s goalkeeper to make a save in the first half. On the other end of the field, Methodist’s Carolina Simpkins handled the two shots on goal she faced before halftime.
- Methodist saw more offensive opportunities in the second half, but still demanded just three saves from the opposing keeper (all off the foot of Hyde). The EMU defense also helped their goalie by blocking three shots on goal in the second half.
