Carrick credits Man United spirit after latest late goal

Michael Carrick has credited the spirit of his Manchester United team after Benjamin Sesko’s stoppage-time goal rescued a result at West Ham.

Manchester United extended their unbeaten run under Carrick to five league games but required a 96th-minute goal from Sesko to leave the London Stadium with a point.

After four consecutive wins, the Red Devils were below their best at West Ham, and fell behind after Tomas Soucek’s well-taken opener for the hosts.

Casemiro had an equaliser disallowed for offside, before Joshua Zirkzee headed wide when well placed as United chased the game. The leveller eventually arrived deep in stoppage time, when substitute Sesko steered in Bryan Mbeumo’s delivery.

Though disappointed with the result, Sesko’s strike means Manchester United have now scored in the final 15 minutes of games in each of Carrick’s five fixtures in charge. The interim boss believes that spirit is something that can take the team forward.

“We were okay. I think we’re a bit disappointed. We definitely weren’t at our best. We’ve had five games now, and we’ve been at a really good level,” Carrick said in interviews with MUTV and TNT Sports.

It’s a tough place to come, they made it difficult, and we just didn’t quite have that sharpness or that spark, really, to find the answers too often. But in the end, big credit to the boys, the spirit again in the late goal, and when we needed it. It’s a great quality to have. So, we’ll take the point and we’ll move on.

“There’s that spirit that galvanises you when you score late goals and you know you’re capable of scoring late goals. It’s good to have it in the bank if you need it. Hopefully, we can see games off a little bit sooner and take the points next time.”
