Johnny Cardoso’s Atletico Madrid season and World Cup push look to be all but over.
Cardoso is set for ankle surgery after suffering a high-grade sprain in club training last week, Atletico Madrid announced Monday. The U.S. men’s national team midfielder could not complete training on Thursday, enduring his latest injury issue with the La Liga side.
There remains no timetable for Cardoso’s return but all signs point to him missing out on the USMNT’s World Cup schedule this summer.
“We send you our best wishes and strength, Johnny, and we wish you a speedy and successful recovery from your injury,” an Atletico Madrid statement read.
The 24-year-old joined Atletico Madrid from Real Betis last summer and made 30 appearances for the club this season. Cardoso scored one goal for Diego Simeone’s squad, which came in a UEFA Champions League win over Club Brugge.
However, injuries plagued Cardoso’s first season in Madrid, keeping him out of several league contests. Cardoso departed USMNT camp last March after enduring a leg injury in a 45-minute friendly performance against Belgium.
Cardoso’s injury could force Mauricio Pochettino’s hand ahead of the Argentine head coach’s World Cup roster reveal on May 26. In addition to Cardoso’s ankle issue, fellow USMNT midfielder Tanner Tessmann has also been ruled out for the remainder of his season with Lyon.
The USMNT will take on Senegal and Germany in their final pre-World Cup tuneups this month before beginning group stage play against Paraguay on June 12.
