Americans Abroad Weekend Rewind: Pepi, Dest, and more

PSV’s first win of the new Eredivisie season saw a pair of American players at the forefront of the result.

Ricardo Pepi and Sergino Dest teamed up for PSV’s eventual winning goal on Saturday in a 2-1 road triumph over Excelsior. Dest teed up Pepi for his first goal of the new season, giving Peter Bosz’s men four points out of six available to begin their title defense.

Ruben van Bommel’s fifth-minute opening goal for PSV was cancelled out by Excelsior’s Casper Widell early in the second half. However, PSV would recapture its lead only three minutes later, hanging on for a vital road win.

An over-the-top ball allowed Dest to race up the right wing before the right back delivered a dangerous cross into the box. Pepi got on the end of Dest’s cross for one-time finish, giving PSV a lead that they wouldn’t relinquish.

PSV hung on for its first victory in all competitions this summer and will continue league play on August 23 against FC Groningen.

Elsewhere, Auston Trusty scored in Celtic’s Scottish League Cup victory over Dundee United. Alex Freeman made a late cameo in Villarreal’s opening weekend draw with Racing Santander. Sam Adeniran scored twice in LASK’s latest triumph while Marlon Fossey assisted once in Standard Liege’s league draw with Mechelen. Kevin Paredes and Donovan Pines were both on the end of lopsided league losses in Europe.
