Kai Havertz looks set to extend his stay at the Emirates, with reports suggesting talks between the German international and Arsenal are progressing, though not quite in the manner some might expect for a player of his growing importance to the side.

According to insider afcxcl, discussions with Kai is currently around extending his existing deal but with no wage rise that usually comes with it. It is a detail that will likely raise a few eyebrows given how influential the Bayer Leverkusen graduate has been has become under Arteta since he moved to N5 from Chelsea. But given how Arsenal have been clam and considerate with all their contract renewals recently, this should likely follow the suite.

Berta at it again?
There is a certain logic to how Arsenal have gone about their business here.
Rather than getting drawn into inflated wage demands the moment a player performs well for a season or two, the North Londoners have consistently looked to give good form with a rising security rather than just throwing money at whatever comes in front of them and this whole Havertz extension looks to be following that exact template.
For Havertz himself, there is little reason to be too disgruntled by the framing of this. He arrived at Arsenal as something of a gamble, a forward being reshaped into a more central, all action midfield role, and the fact he has bought into that project so completely says plenty about his character.
A straightforward extension, even without extra wages attached, is as much a vote of confidence from the club as it is a financial matter, and by all accounts Havertz values his role within Arteta’s setup just as much as any pay packet.

This speaks to the broader picture at the Emirates this season. With significant money already spent chasing forwards through the summer and further funds tied up in deals for the likes of Ezri Konsa and others, keeping the wage bill under control where possible clearly remains a priority for Berta and the recruitment department, even amid an ambitious title defence.
Gooners will simply be glad to see the situation heading towards resolution rather than dragging into genuine uncertainty. Havertz has become far too important to this Arsenal side for his contract to be treated as anything other than a formality, wage increase or not, and a new deal on these terms looks a sensible outcome for both parties.
