Newcastle are said to be watching his progress closely as they weigh up their options at centre-back before next year’s two transfer windows, although they are expected to face stiff competition from clubs in Germany, Italy and Spain.

Who Is Abdelhamid Ait Boudlal?
Born in Marrakech, Ait Boudlal developed in Morocco before joining Rennes last year. He spent the second half of 2024/25 on loan at Amiens SC, then broke into the Rennes side last season. So far he has made 25 appearances for the club, scoring twice and providing one assist. He is part of a fresh wave of young French-based talent that includes Ayyoub Bouaddi and Eliesse Ben Seghir.
Why Newcastle and Everton Need a Centre-Back
Everton’s reasoning is easy to follow. James Tarkowski and Michael Keane are nearing the end of their careers, so the Toffees need a long-term partner for Jarrad Branthwaite.
Newcastle’s situation is similar. Sven Botman has been hampered by fitness problems, while Fabian Schar and Dan Burn are both past 30. A young, physical defender would fit the Magpies’ needs neatly.
In my view, Newcastle look better placed to offer a clear pathway than Everton, but Rennes hold all the cards. After rejecting Fulham’s €30m bid, they are unlikely to sell cheaply, and interest from Europe’s bigger leagues could push the price higher. Whoever moves first with a serious, well-structured offer may gain a decisive advantage.
