This season has been a slog for the Chicago Stars and their supporters. They have been rooted to the bottom of the National Women’s Soccer League table for a while and are all but certain to end the campaign there. Still, the future looks a good bit brighter now that Vlatko Andonovski is in charge.
Andonovski was hired as Chicago’s chief soccer officer on September 17, with the club statement confirming that he will “oversee all sporting efforts…including working closely with the head coach on roster building, on-field strategy, scouting, transfers and player development”.
It sounds like a similar position to the one Andonovski initially held with the Kansas City Current, where he built one of the best teams in league history. The only difference this time is that he isn’t also the head coach. He will, however, have a big say in who that person is and therefore still play a significant role in shaping the club’s training and game model.
But what exactly is the Andonovski approach, and what could it look like in Chicago?
