It was a very positive press conference for Xabi Alonso today, as he had a lot of good injury news to talk about.

He also had a chance to wax lyrical about Josh Acheampong, who has played a fair bit for him already and carried his form into the international break with England’s Under-21s.

“He has played already a few games and he is ready for sure to play,” Alonso said.

“I saw that he did well with the Under-21s. He didn’t play the last game against Ireland but he has done well and for sure he is taking a step forward. He is playing more mature, more aggressive, knowing what it takes to compete in the Premier League. For him being that young, he has great potential and great qualities. He has played and he will play again.”

It’s the same thing we’ve heard from a succession of managers now – they all rate Josh and talk about how much they like him and how much they trust him.

Yet no matter how bad our defensive record gets, they always revert to playing older, more experienced players rather than giving him a run of Premier League starts.

We’ll believe it when we see it, Xabi.

In other news…

The injury news from today’s press conference was great – the three week break came at a perfect time for Chelsea it seems.

The biggest injury news of the whole presser was on Moises Caicedo, who is finally going to return from a troublesome calf injury.
