Liverpool travel to LASK on Wednesday looking to build on their opening Champions League win over Atletico Madrid and respond to defeat by Manchester City.
Andoni Iraola’s side beat Atletico 2-1 on matchday one but lost 3-0 at home to City on Sunday, a game that was goalless until Ryan Gravenberch’s red card in the 62nd minute. They are ninth in the Premier League with nine points from six games, and the trip to Linz is the second of nine matches in 28 days.
LASK have lost four in a row since winning their first seven domestic matches, and have never beaten an English club. Liverpool have never lost in Austria in a competitive match, and won both previous meetings with LASK in the 2023-24 Europa League.
Liverpool team news
Cody Gakpo, Alexander Isak and Dominik Szoboszlai were not in the 23-man squad that flew to Austria, with Iraola saying at his Tuesday press conference that the trio are “not far” but that he could not say whether any had trained with the group. He is taking it day to day and does not know whether they will be ready for Brentford, Villarreal or Brighton.
Hugo Ekitike (Achilles), Giovanni Leoni (anterior cruciate ligament) and Conor Bradley (knee) remain long-term absentees, and Federico Chiesa and Wataru Endo are ineligible, having not been in the league-phase squad list. Lewis Koumas, who replaced Isak against City, is expected to lead the line again.
Iraola said it will be difficult to name exactly the same XI because of freshness and niggles, with four games in 10 days. Gravenberch is available, as his one-match ban applies to the Premier League game at Brentford on Saturday, and Virgil van Dijk, who took a painful calf knock against City, travelled with the squad.
Alisson Becker could keep his place in goal, though Giorgi Mamardashvili is also in the squad. Bradley Barcola, whom Iraola said improves the more he plays alongside team-mates, is expected to keep his place, with Rio Ngumoha tipped to replace Victor Munoz.
Liverpool predicted lineup
Liverpool possible starting XI: Alisson; Araujo, Jacquet, Van Dijk, Kerkez; Gravenberch, Mac Allister; Barcola, Wirtz, Ngumoha; Koumas
