Joe Scally continues strong attacking form in German Cup win

Joe Scally is quickly becoming a focal point in Borussia Moenchengladbach’s turnaround this fall.

Scally assisted once on Tuesday in Gladbach’s 2-0 German Cup win over Karlsruher, continuing a positive run of form for the American defender. The Bundesliga side has now won back-to-back matches for the first time this season.

Robin Hack boosted Alexander Blessin’s squad in front after seven minutes, finishing off a Scally assist into the back of the net.

It marked Scally’s second assist of the season, his fourth goal contribution in his last four appearances, and his fifth overall this campaign.

Despite the hosts being reduced to 10 men before halftime, Lukas Ullrich doubled Gladbach’s lead four minutes after the interval.

Scally logged the full 90 minutes as a third centerback, winning three duels, making five clearances, and delivering two tackles. The 23-year-old helped Gladbach register their second shutout of the season, with both of them coming in German Cup action.

Gladbach sporting director Rouven Schroder praised Scally’s recent impact over the past few weeks, hoping that the defender can continue to be impactful for the club.

“What’s actually going on with Scally,” Schroder said in a postmatch interview with Bild. “Joe is now dangerous, hats off to him! This is really amazing, and he can continue like this.”

Up next for Gladbach is a home Bundesliga showdown with Paderborn on Saturday before a trip to Hamburg ahead of the November international break.
