The Top American Talent Playing Women’s Soccer in Europe

Before this season, the NWSL witnessed some of the best American talent head overseas to play in Europe. Some big names included Naomi Girma and Crystal Dunn. Let’s take a look at the top American players who continue to push the women’s game forward in Europe.

Naomi Girma (Chelsea FC)

There’s no doubt that Girma has set herself apart from most defenders in the brightest of ways. Her defensive tenacity and wisdom in the backline served the San Diego Wave well before she transferred to Chelsea. Despite being sidelined for seven weeks due to a calf injury she suffered in her debut match with Chelsea, her return helped the team successfully win the FA Cup.

Korbin Albert (Lyon)

After two and a half seasons with PSG, Albert has recently agreed to move to Lyon. Her skill in the midfield is undeniable and helped the USWNT beat Brazil with her goal in the 2024 Olympics group stage. Despite controversies stemming from supporting anti-LGBTQ content online last year, Albert continues to develop both on and off the field.

Crystal Dunn (PSG)

Those who have followed women’s soccer know Dunn has had an impact on the field since her UNC days. Before heading to PSG, she spent the majority of her time with NWSL squads such as the Washington Spirit, NC Courage, Portland Thorns, and NY/NJ Gotham. In six matches with PSG, she scored two goals and recorded one assist.

Jenna Nighswonger (Arsenal)

After being an incredible factor for the Seminoles, Nighswonger played a great role for Gotham in 2023. Her versatility is no joke as she was positioned at left back despite being an attacker while at Florida State. Now she plays for Arsenal, showcasing why she is one of the best in the game.

Emily Fox (Arsenal)

Like a lot of skillful players, Fox spent her collegiate career at UNC. After playing for Racing Louisville and NC Courage, she went abroad to represent the Gunners. Fox has played for Arsenal since 2024 and recently helped the squad win their first UEFA title since 2017.

Lily Yohannes (Ajax)

Young star Lily Yohannes has made a remarkable impression on many soccer fans and, most importantly, the USWNT staff. Her technique in the midfield area is exquisite. She has been playing for Ajax since 2013, and in 39 appearances, she has recorded 11 goals so far. She’ll be under contract until 2026. Yohannes is sure to continue developing with the senior national team as time progresses, and we should all be excited to witness her growth.

Lindsey Heaps (Lyon)

Heaps is no stranger to playing in Europe. She played for PSG from 2012-2016 and has been playing for Lyon since 2022. Not only is she a pillar for the USWNT, but she has also set herself as a critical piece to the Lyon squad. In 41 appearances for Lyon, she has netted 22 goals. Her toughness and ball control are of the highest level, and her veteran role for both Lyon and the USWNT make her an invaluable addition to both squads.

Mia Fishel (Chelsea FC)

Since 2023, Fishel has played for the Blue Devils. Despite suffering a discouraging ACL injury in 2024, she has recently returned to the pitch. She supported Chelsea as the team secured both the FA Cup and WSL title this season. Her role in the USWNT is not stable at the moment, but without a doubt, fans should expect to see her compete in more matches in the future.

Eva Gaetino (PSG)

Although only playing in the 2025 SheBelieves Cup with the US senior team, Gaetino is surely a player to keep shortlisted for the future. She began playing for PSG after finishing her collegiate career at Notre Dame. In 2024, she signed a two-year extension with the French team.

Catarina Macario (Chelsea FC)

As of late, Macario has been incredible in the midfield and attacking positions. Since receiving clearance to play for the USWNT in 2021, she has demonstrated why she is worthy of a roster spot. Her role at Chelsea has been no different, despite enduring an ACL injury in her first season with the Blue Devils. Macario continues to shine and gives hope to girls who have dreams of  coming to America and playing professional soccer.

Kristie Mewis (West Ham United)

Kristie has been a helpful contributor to the growth of women’s soccer. Before transferring to West Ham in late 2023, she had a great deal in helping Gotham lift the NWSL title earlier that same year. She and her partner, Sam Kerr, recently announced the birth of their son. It will be exciting to see Mewis return to the pitch in the near future.

Phallon Tullis-Joyce (Manchester United)

With Alyssa’s retirement, the goalkeeper position for the USWNT is in need of filling. Tullis-Joyce has been a great candidate and has been shortlisted by Emma Hayes. In her three appearances for the senior team, she has recorded two clean sheets. She had a great run for Seattle Reign before playing for the Red Devils.
