In this week’s women’s soccer news, the Wave is set to retire Alex Morgan’s jersey; an update on Aitana Bonmati; more USWNT debuts; and more!
High of the Week
The San Diego Wave announced this week that they would be retiring Alex Morgan’s jersey on September 7 when the Wave hosts the Houston Dash. Morgan was the captain of the club from the very beginning when she joined the club ahead of their inaugural season in 2022. With the club, she appeared in 50 games and scored 23 goals. Morgan is a trailblazer in the sport, so the jersey retirement is well-deserved. Since retiring from professional soccer in 2024, she has joined the San Diego Wave ownership group, investing in her hometown club.

Low of the Week
Unfortunately, Spain midfielder Aitana Bonmati was admitted to the hospital. She was diagnosed with viral meningitis and was in the hospital for a few days receiving treatment. On Sunday, it was announced that she had been discharged and would rejoin Spain’s squad as they get ready for the UEFA Euros that begin on July 2. Her status for the tournament is still up in the air, but there’s a chance she’ll be ready to play. We’re glad that Bonmati is feeling better, and we hope to see her on the field soon!
Gracias a tod@s por los mensajes recibidos y a l@s que me habéis ayudado estos días. Afortunadamente todo va bien, espero volver pronto. 💪🏼⚔️🧠

News of the Week
Another USWNT camp under Emma Hayes means new debuts. There have been 24 players who have earned their first caps since Hayes took over as head coach. She’s determined to bring in new faces, and it’s fun to see players get their moments. In the first of two matches against Ireland, Claudia Dickey, Jordyn Bugg, and Lilly Reale all made their senior national team debuts. In the second match against Ireland, Izzy Rodriguez and Sam Meza earned their first caps.

Transfer of the Week
Maria Sanchez is headed back to Mexico as she joined Liga MX Femenil’s Tigres on a four-year deal. The forward previously played for Tigres in 2021 before she made a move to the NWSL. Sanchez joined the San Diego Wave in 2024 after requesting a trade from the Houston Dash. With the Wave, she scored four goals in 34 appearances. Tigres did have to pay an undisclosed fee to the Wave to sign the forward.

Goal of the Week
Lynn Biyendolo got to wear the captain’s armband for the first time for the USWNT in their 4-0 win over Ireland, and the captain got the scoring started in pretty fashion. Emma Sears sent a beautiful cross into the box, and Biyendolo was there to volley the ball into the top of the net.

Assist of the Week
Lauren Hemp sent a pass to Jess Carter, who served the ball onto a silver platter to Lucy Bronze, who made no mistake about heading the ball into the back of the net. England defeated Jamaica 7-0 in their last game before beginning Euros play on July 5th.

Rose Lavelle met UCLA women’s basketball star Lauren Betts, and the height difference was quite large, so Lavelle asked the photographer to get a photo of her jumping in the air to close the gap. It’s a funny video that everybody should watch to start their week.

What To Look Forward To
The NWSL might be on a summer break, but the UEFA Women’s Euros begin on July 2nd with Iceland and Finland taking off in the first match. It’s exciting to have tournament soccer in July. England are the reigning champions after winning the tournament in 2022.
