Tim Weah will be one of several players looking to fight their way back into the U.S. Men’s National Team picture this November and Sunday provided a good reminder of what he’s capable of in the final third.
Weah logged 90 minutes and registered two assists on Sunday in Marseille’s 5-2 Ligue 1 win over Angers. It marked one of the American winger/defender’s best performances in a Marseille shirt as he helped the club jump into the top-eight of the league standings.
Angers struck first in the 14th minute but Weah’s first assist helped Marseille tie the match before halftime.
Weah’s cross was headed home by Himad Abdelli, giving the visitors an equalizer before Nouhoum Kamissoko propelled Marseille ahead 2-1 ahead of the interval.
Amine Gouiri extended Marseille’s lead on the hour mark after slotting home a rebound after a denied penalty kick opportunity. However, Angers would trim the deficit to 3-2 through Amine El Ouazzani’s penalty kick goal, giving the hosts a late lifeline.
Marseille wouldn’t let its lead slip away though as Amine Harit made it 4-2 after 83 minutes before Weah teed up Igor Paixao’s insurance finish two minutes later.
Weah also finished the match with two duels won, three interceptions, and four defensive recoveries, excelling on both ends of the pitch.
Bruno Genesio’s squad will now turn their attention back towards UEFA Europa League play with a trip to Sturm Graz coming up on Thursday.
Should Weah continue on the upward trend, it will be hard to see him not included for November’s CONCACAF Nations League schedule.
