Birmingham City head coach Amy Merricks says that her side will be aiming to replicate recent high performance levels when they take on Charlton Athletic at St. Andrew’s @ Knighthead Park this weekend.
Blues are yet to win in the Barclays Women’s Super League this season but they have competed strongly in all of their games so far.
Birmingham City recorded an excellent 1-1 draw at Arsenal in their last league game. When speaking to the media in the pre-match press conference, Birmingham City head coach Merricks said that she was really impressed with her side’s performance in North London.
“It was a brilliant performance,” Merricks said. “That performance certainly deserved a point; our desire to defend, our relentlessness throughout the game, our quality to score the goal, I was really impressed.
“The togetherness of the team and everything else, it feels like it’s starting to click and we’ve just got to keep focused on improving every day.
“We’ve been competitive in a lot of fixtures, especially against the top four and I was pleased that we got our rewards in that game.”
Birmingham City’s next opponents are Charlton Athletic who are bottom of the table. Merricks says that the target is for her side to replicate recent good performances.
She said “We go into every game aiming to compete and get as many points as we can, that doesn’t change this weekend. We’ve made some great strides. We’ve been in every game, we’ve been competitive and it’s important that we replicate that again.
“When we perform, we give ourselves every chance of getting as many points as we can, so the full focus is on competing this weekend, making sure that we are relentless again and making sure we are together. We want to execute the identity that we want to play with and impose ourselves on the game.
“We are at home, we know we will get the fans behind us, so we want to put on a good performance.”
This weekend’s game is huge for both sides as they look to climb the table, but Merricks says that every game holds importance.
She said “I’m a massive Karen Hills fan, the job that she has done there has been fantastic. They’re a well-coached side, very organised defensively and they do carry a threat.
“For every team in this league, every game is ‘must-win’. We go into every game wanting to get as many points as we can and that’s no different this weekend.
“We have to focus on our jobs, ourselves, how we go and impose ourselves on the game and make sure that we execute that to the best of our ability. I want to see a lot of togetherness again and some real relentlessness in doing all of the basics right.
“I’m really looking forward to it because both sides know each other really well. I think it’ll be a great game.”
