CAF reverses AFCON four-year cycle decision, returns to biennial tournament

The Confederation of African Football (CAF) has reversed its decision to stage the Africa Cup of Nations every four years, confirming that the tournament will return to a two-year cycle. The CAF Executive Committee unanimously approved the decision, restoring the competitions traditional schedule after previously announcing plans to move to a four-year format.CAF President Patrice Motsepe said the decision followed a reassessment of the proposed Africa Nations League, which was expected to replace the AFCON as the continents major biennial competition. However, the project would require several years to generate the financial resources needed to support African football and make CAF competitions globally competitive and financially sustainable.Motsepe said the decision was taken in the interest of African football and the confederations 54 member associations, while also considering African players competing for clubs outside the continent. The decision by the CAF EXCO that the CAF AFCON should take place every Two Years was based on advancing, protecting and promoting the interest of African Football and CAFs 54 Member Associations, Motsepe said. The next AFCON will take place in 2027 across Kenya, Tanzania and Uganda, with the subsequent editions scheduled for 2028, 2031 and 2033.The 2030 edition will be skipped to avoid a clash with the FIFA World Cup, in line with the scheduling tradition of major international football tournaments.Motsepe expressed confidence that the 2027 tournament would be successful, adding that AFCON remains an important platform for celebrating African football, culture and unity. The decision marks a significant shift in CAFs competition calendar and ensures that the continents flagship national team tournament will continue to be held every two years.
