Calvin Bassey to Man United? Fulham captain on the radar

Calvin Bassey is on Manchester United’s radar, with the Fulham captain’s contract running out next summer and at least five other clubs watching the same situation.

According to TEAMtalk, Manchester United are keeping a close eye on the 26-year-old, and their football department have been impressed by what they have seen this season. Interest in the Nigeria international is said to be growing.

It is not hard to see why the timing suits them. United have conceded seven goals in their last two competitive games, a 4-1 defeat to Como in the Champions League followed by a 3-0 home loss to Bournemouth, and Michael Carrick is expected to change his defence again for Saturday’s 12.30pm trip to Chelsea.

Lisandro Martinez, meanwhile, faces an uncertain future after criticising the club’s hierarchy following the defeat to Atletico Madrid. He is reportedly ready to leave, with Barcelona making an enquiry.

Why Calvin Bassey appeals to Man United

Bassey has been one of the standout performers for Alvaro Arbeloa’s Fulham side, despite their struggles for consistent results, and he has been trusted with the captain’s armband.

He also offers two positions for one signing. He can play at centre-back or left-back, he has Premier League experience, and he does not turn 27 until December.

A back line heading for a rebuild

That versatility matters because United are preparing an extensive defensive rebuild in 2027. Luke Shaw, Martinez and Harry Maguire are all out of contract next summer, and Maguire turns 34 in March.

Leny Yoro and Ayden Heaven are young centre-backs who still have work to do to prove they can be key players at Old Trafford, while Matthijs de Ligt has only just returned from a lengthy injury absence. Carrick’s own future has been the main talking point after those two heavy defeats.

Who else wants Calvin Bassey?

United will not have the field to themselves. Newcastle United and Everton have both been keeping tabs on Bassey this season as they plan their own defensive recruitment, and Everton are already competing with United for Rayan Ait-Nouri as well.

Abroad, Inter Milan, Borussia Dortmund and RB Leipzig are all monitoring him.

Fulham still hold one important card

Fulham are not powerless here. They have the option to extend Bassey’s deal by a further 12 months and they are interested in agreeing fresh terms.

Suitors may still see a chance to get a cut-price deal, but that option means any idea of a bargain depends on what Fulham do next.

Would Calvin Bassey fix Man United’s defence?

On his own, no. Seven goals conceded in two games is a bigger problem than any one signing can solve, and nobody yet knows who will be picking the team next season.

But he makes a lot of sense as part of the plan. A captain who covers two positions, with his contract situation working in the buyer’s favour, is the sort of smart business United need if three senior defenders are about to walk out of the door. We would make him a serious option, and we suspect Everton and Newcastle feel exactly the same.
