Since Emi Martinez’s horrific collision with Jarrad Branthwaite in the Everton game two weeks ago, the focus was been on whether he’s ok, and then on how Mike Penders will do as his replacement.
There hasn’t been much information about how soon the Argentine could be back, until today’s report from the Athletic.
Martinez pushes for early return after jaw surgery

Simon Johnson says that the goalkeeper is planning to “make an earlier than planned return,” after surgery on his broken jaw.
Martinez himself said he would be “back in a few weeks,” which was taken to mean a month at least. But sources “with knowledge of his rehabilitation” have told Johnson that he could now “return sooner than that time frame.”
We still wouldn’t expect to see him in the next week, and beyond that there is an international break. It feels eminently more sensible to just wait until after that, but Martinez isn’t that sort of character. He will be pushing to get back out there as soon as he has clearance, no matter whether it’s sensible or not.
He will almost certainly be wearing one of those Abraham Lincoln jaw protectors.

Xabi Alonso’s comments about the importance of the Carabao Cup have not been well received by Chelsea fans.
Emmanuel Emegha got his first competitive minutes for Chelsea last night, and could play an important role on Saturday.
Alonso didn’t bring on Estevao for even a minute in the game, and had to answer questions about that afterwards.
