President John Dramani Mahama has predicted that Ghana will capture either the next Africa Cup of Nations or the World Cup trophy if head coach Carlos Queiroz is retained to lead the national team.Queiroz was appointed on a four-month contract to lead the team to the 2026 World Cup, with the contract expiring at the end of July.Speaking Friday during an official inspection tour of the Ho Sports Stadium, Mahama expressed absolute confidence in the squad’s championship potential under the veteran Portuguese manager. The President pushed back against critics who had predicted an early group-stage exit at the 2026 FIFA World Cup, pointing to the team’s resilient run to the Round of 32 as definitive proof of their long-term elite capability.Mahama insisted that keeping the current technical leadership intact guarantees that the Black Stars will transform from tournament participants into genuine global title winners.”I’m sure that if we keep this team, and we persuade the coach Carlos Queiroz to continue to work with the team, by the time of the next AFCON and the next World Cup, we’ll have a team that can claim the championship in either of those two competitions,” Mahama declared. The Black Stars entered the 2026 World Cup with limited expectations but progressed to the newly introduced Round of 32 knockout stage under Queirozs guidance.Ghana opened their campaign with a narrow 1-0 victory over Panama before securing a goalless draw against England, extending their impressive record in second group matches at the World Cup.After qualifying for the knockout phase, the Black Stars suffered a narrow defeat to Croatia in their final group game before their campaign ended with elimination against Colombia in the Round of 32.
