(Photo by Michael Regan – FIFA/FIFA via Getty Images)Blackburn Rovers are closing in on the signing of Ghana captain Jordan Ayew on a free transfer as manager Tony Mowbray looks to strengthen his squad, according to reportsThe 34-year-old is available after leaving Leicester City at the end of last season following their relegation from the Championship.Ayew is now in talks with Blackburn, who are keen to add his experience and versatility to their attack.The Ghana international made 42 Championship appearances for Leicester last season, scoring six goals and providing three assists. He started 24 of those matches.Blackburn have struggled with squad depth early in the new campaign, with a number of players currently unavailable through injury.Mowbray had hoped to add players before the transfer window closed but was unable to complete some of his preferred deals. The club have therefore turned to the free-agent market, with Ayew emerging as a target.The experienced forward can operate as a central striker or from either wing, giving Blackburn another option in the final third.Ayew has extensive experience of English football, having also played for Crystal Palace, Swansea City and Aston Villa in the Premier League.He spent more than a decade in England after beginning his European career with Marseille in France.A move to Blackburn would allow Ayew to remain in the Championship, where he made a significant number of appearances last season despite Leicester’s difficult campaign.Blackburn have started the season inconsistently, picking up four points from their opening two matches before recording one draw and two defeats in their following three games.Their latest result was a 2-1 defeat against Preston on Saturday, increasing the need for Mowbray to add depth to his squad.Ayew’s experience at club and international level, together with his ability to play in several attacking positions, could make him an important addition if Blackburn complete the deal.
