London City Lionesses’ marquee signing Alexia Putellas admits that she is excited for the challenge that awaits her in England.
The midfielder shocked world football when she made the move from Spanish giants FC Barcelona to London City Lionesses earlier this summer. Putellas signed a three-year deal with The Pride.
When speaking to the media ahead of the new Barclays Women’s Super League season, Putellas commented on what drew her to English football’s top division.
“You never know what will be the result of the games, it’s a very competitive league week-after-week,” Putellas said. “We haven’t started yet, but I have to imagine that all the games will push you to your limit. In my opinion, it’s a very entertaining league, so I think that was a key point.”
Going on to discuss her move to London City Lionesses, Putellas said that she is ready to contribute to the project and is hungry to improve.
She said “I’m going to bring to the project [at London City Lionesses] whatever the project needs from me. I’m 100% committed, I’m hungry for winning. I’m hungry for being better day-after-day, to fight with my teammates for the victories. I’m going to try to give my best to the team and let’s see [where we are] at the end of the season.
“It will be different for sure, but that’s why I’m here because I’m looking forward to improving myself as a footballer and as a person as well. It’s kind of [about] being a more complete player as much as I can. It’s about learning new things playing with and against other players, just trying to find where my limits are.
“Of course, it will take time because it’s a new beginning, a big change for me, but I’m so excited to be here.”
Having been in Barcelona for much of her life, Putellas also spoke about now living in London.
She said “In Barcelona, I knew what I needed to do to find an apartment or where to go shopping and now here, everything is new. I’m learning new things about what to do in London, there’s a lot of traffic here. I’m happy to be in London and I’ve already tried English breakfast.
“It’s quite different from Spain, but I’m open minded to trying new things.”
Putellas will test herself against some unfamiliar opponents this season in some big stadiums and she is looking forward to the experience.
She said “It’s new for me, of course, not the Champions League teams, but in this competition. I’m looking forward to playing the first game at home, then also playing away and seeing what it is like playing in the biggest stadiums in England. I want to just enjoy this part of football.”
London City Lionesses kick-off the new Barclays Women’s Super League season with a home fixture against Manchester United on Friday 4 September 2026.
