Liverpool move for David Otorbi as Valencia raise clause

Liverpool have made a strong push to sign Valencia winger David Otorbi, informing both the club and the player’s agent this week that they wanted to activate his €30m release clause.

Valencia, though, moved quickly. They have triggered a three-year extension in the 19-year-old’s contract, which takes his release clause up to €60m.

It’s familiar territory for Liverpool, who turned to the Spanish market to sign Víctor Muñoz from Osasuna in the summer and are now back in Spain for another winger.

Liverpool move to trigger David Otorbi’s release clause

Tribuna Deportiva first reported the move on X, revealing that Andoni Iraola’s side informed Valencia and Otorbi’s camp earlier this week of their intention to pay the €30m clause.

In April, Otorbi signed a contract until 2028 with an option for a further three years. That option has now been triggered, and Plaza Deportiva report that Valencia acted even before he reached the number of appearances needed for the extension to kick in automatically. His salary will also rise, and the renewal is set to be made official soon.

Why Valencia doubled David Otorbi’s release clause

Valencia took action because several English clubs had been working behind the scenes to sign Otorbi for €30m. With the renewal, that route is now closed.

Who is David Otorbi?

Otorbi is a product of Valencia‘s youth system and made his first-team debut in January 2024. He has played 13 matches so far, eight of them this season, and his only goal was the crucial equaliser in the 2-2 draw against Racing Santander earlier this month.

Newcastle and the Premier League queue for David Otorbi

Liverpool aren’t the only English club watching. Newcastle United scouts followed the 19-year-old live earlier this month, and his agent Nacho Gallart has admitted the interest is heavy.

“He’s a lad who has a big market, and he always has. Quite a few clubs have called us in recent weeks. It’s true that many clubs have called us, especially from the Premier League,” he said.

Liverpool’s scouts were already in Spain to follow Harvey Elliott, who is on loan at Mestalla, and their officials also met Valencia manager Javier Aguirre and sporting director Braulio Vázquez.

Author Opinion

Valencia’s response tells you everything about how highly they rate Otorbi. Doubling the clause for a teenager with 13 senior appearances is a statement, and it has turned what looked like a straightforward €30m deal into something far more expensive.

For Liverpool, who are still searching for answers down the right-hand side, the question now is whether Otorbi is worth €60m, or whether they simply moved a week too late.
