Manchester United will look to turn a corner in the Premier League after the international break having won only one out of their first five fixtures earlier on as they look to relieve some pressure off Michael Carrick.
One of the key changes the Englishman could make in his setup is introduce Carlos Baleba, who will imminently make his debut after joining the Red Devils from Brighton & Hove Albion during the summer transfer window.
Baleba joins Andrey Santos and Youri Tielemans as new signings in United’s midfield but the Red Devils are not fully done yet as they are now believed to be eyeing a reunion with one of their former players next summer.
Italian source Tutto Mercato Web has reported that Man United are keen on signing Napoli midfielder Scott McTominay, who is understood to be open to departing the Serie A side next year when he enters the last year of his contract at the club.
As per the source, the Scottish international is holding out for a salary of £7 million per annum, which Napoli are reluctant to hand him. He is valued at £34 million on Transfermarkt, which United may view as a fair price for the midfielder.
McTominay would be important if he rejoins United
Scott McTominay has developed into one of Europe’s best midfielders since departing Manchester United and having rejuvenated his form in Italy over the last few seasons, he could be the player who influences their fortunes majorly next year.
Despite recent investments in the transfer market, United have lacked energy and physicality in midfield, which McTominay can provide. Moreover, his strong aerial prowess, success rate in physical duels and ability to drive the ball forward will be key.
At 30, McTominay will have a good balance of skills and experience, so if he is available for a reasonable sum next summer, there is no reason why Man United must not consider a reunion with him.
