Sam Coffey ruled out for USWNT October matches, replaced by Jaelin Howell

Sam Coffey has been ruled out for the U.S. women’s national team’s upcoming matches against Spain due to injury.

Gotham FC midfielder Jaelin Howell will replace the Manchester City midfielder on the USWNT’s training camp roster for the October international window.

Coffey sustained an injury Sunday in Manchester City’s 4-2 win over Arsenal, according to a USWNT press release.

“(T)he highs and lows of football,” Coffey wrote on Instagram after the announcement. “Epic wins followed by deep disappointment. But I know my God doesn’t waste a thing, and somehow, it’s all part of the story He’s writing. I’ll be cheering on my girls from afar. Be back real soon 🩵”

Howell has scored one goal across her six career caps since her USWNT debut in 2020. The 26-year-old most recently came on as a substitute against Italy in 2025.

A consistent starter for Gotham, Howell currently ranks third in the National Women’s Soccer League in fouls drawn, interceptions and tackles won.

The replacement is not the first change the USWNT has made to its roster ahead of facing world number one-ranked Spain on Oct. 10 in Washington and Oct. 13 in Chester, Pa.

Utah Royals defender Kate Del Fava earned her first senior call-up Sunday as a replacement for the injured Chelsea center back Naomi Girma, who like Coffey plays in the Women’s Super League.
