Gotham FC currently sit in a prime position near the top of the NWSL standings, but now must navigate a new challenge. Earlier this week, head coach Juan Carlos Amorós announced that he would be stepping away from the team for five weeks of paternity leave.
In steps Shaun Harris, who will serve as Gotham’s interim head coach while Amorós is on leave. Harris brings north of 15 years of coaching experience to the table, including having spent the last three and a half years with Gotham.
From East London to North London
Harris was born in East London, and would go on to attend University of Greenwich and receive a degree in Sport Science with Professional Football Coaching. Harris’ passion for coaching was evident, and would come to fruition in North London with Tottenham.
Harris would go on to spend north of 11 years with Tottenham Hotspur, where he would serve in a variety of different roles, including as a Football Development Coach and the Senior Global Football Development Coach. However, his most important role came in his final two years there, where he would serve as the Tottenham Hotspur Women’s Assistant Coach.
In those two years, Harris would cement himself as a premier assistant coach in the women’s game. Harris served as a key part of head coach Rehanne Skinner’s coaching staff, in which the Spurs would notably finish fifth in the WSL for the 2021-2022 season, marking their best ever season in the league.
Making the Move Across the Pond
In 2023, another former Tottenham man, Juan Carlos Amorós, was hired as the Gotham FC head coach. As Amorós built his staff, Shaun Harris was selected to be the Lead Assistant Coach.
It’s been as close to a dream start with Gotham as Harris could ask for, playing a part in the two NWSL championships the club won in 2023 and 2025. These winning ways have even carried into this season, with Gotham already having won the 2026 NWSL Challenge Cup. Now though, Harris has a unique task on his hands.
After Amorós announced his paternity leave, Harris was thrust into the spotlight, taking over as head coach for the time being. His first game as head coach came against the Portland Thorns, as Gotham was able to gut their way to a 2-2 draw in a match up between two of the NWSL’s top clubs currently.
The Task at Hand
As Gotham currently sits near the top of the standings, Harris’ job is to keep them there until Amorós returns. The 2-2 draw against Portland marks a solid start, but there’s more work to be done in the coming weeks, which includes premier match ups against teams such as San Diego and Kansas City.
More personally, Shaun Harris has cemented himself as one of the best assistant coaches in soccer. This opportunity to take the reins while Amorós is gone could serve as an audition of sorts. Harris is likely set to be a candidate for head coaching vacancies this offseason, and if these next five weeks go well for him, there’s a real chance we see head coach Shaun Harris somewhere come next season.
