Aidan Morris and Middlesbrough are headed to the EFL Championship promotion playoffs.
Middlesbrough will face off with Southampton in the two-legged semifinal series after Saturday’s finale of matches concluded the regular season. Kim Hellberg’s squad earned a 2-2 draw with Wrexham on Saturday while Ipswich Town’s 3-0 win over QPR officially sealed the Tractor Boys’ return to the top-flight.
Morris started and played 90 minutes in the match, continuing what has been a productive second season for the club. The former Columbus Crew midfielder made his 42nd appearance on Saturday, setting a new career-high for appearances in a single campaign.
Middlesbrough’s inconsistency during the second half of the season hurt them in the race for automatic promotion. With only two league wins in their final 10 matches, Boro dropped out of the top-two and will now have to endure the playoffs to secure a first berth back into the top-flight for the first time since 2017.
Middlesbrough earned a 1-1 road draw at Southampton last September before claiming a 4-0 home victory in December.
Millwall will face Hull City in the other semifinal showdown this month, with the two winners of the series meeting at Wembley Stadium.
Middlesbrough will host Southampton on May 9 before traveling to St. Mary’s Stadium for the second leg three days later.
